Which paint to choose for your kitchen cabinets and how to apply it.

 

So you have made your decision to transform your kitchen by painting your kitchen cupboards and you have decided on the color and style, you can read my article Do you want to transform your kitchen, but you don’t know where to start - paint your kitchen cabinets! You have done all your prep.work you can read my article What not to do before painting your kitchen cabinets!  and you are now ready to buy your paint and get on with it! But first you need to decide whether you will use chalk paint or water-based enamel paints.

Let’s talk a little about chalk paint. There are many brands of chalk paint on the market. My personal favorite is the Frenchic, Al Fresco range. This is a durable, weatherproof, UV resistant chalk paint specifically developed for exterior and interior use. Frenchic Al Fresco is self-priming, self-sealing, self-levelling with a slight sheen, so the best thing is, you don’t need to prime your cabinets first and you don’t need to seal the paint with a varnish. But if you do like to have a satin sheen on your cabinets then you can add a couple of coats of satin finish varnish for that extra sheen. I do recommend however a coat of primer on mdf and laminate cupboards first as it helps the paint to stick to these difficult surfaces. 

  

If you decide to use a chalk paint which is not weather proof then keep in mind that you should really prime the cabinets first and you definitely need to seal them with a good quality varnish after painting. A gloss finish varnish will give your cabinets a strong, glossy sheen, but it will highlight any flaws that the cabinets may have. Satin finish varnishes are usually the best choice for kitchens. A mat finish varnish is often times difficult to clean so I don’t recommend it.

 

Water-based enamel paints is one of my favorite choices of paint for kitchen cabinets and my personal favorite is TITANLUX Esmalte Ecologico which is available in mat, satin or gloss finishes. TITANLUX is an ecological, water-soluble, multi-adhesive paint with high quality protection from the first coat and prevents the appearance of mold, does not turn yellow and its color remains stable. Again we don’t need to prime the surface first but I do recommend using a primer for MDF or laminate surfaces. The gloss version is highly durable as is the satin. Again I don’t recommend a mat finish. This paint does not need to be sealed with a varnish but if you do want extra protection you can apply a couple of coats of a good quality varnish.

 Step 1:

Assess the condition of your cabinets.

Surfaces that are already painted can be painted again if the existing paint is in good condition. If not, then the old paint will need to be removed. Stripping products are available that make this process easy. Simply apply with a brush, wait for the stripper to react with the old paint and then use a plastic scraper to peel it away. Once dry, remove the last of the paint with sandpaper.

Step 2:

Paint your cabinets.

The following directions are for applying with a brush and roller (DIY-friendly).

Step 1: Paint the inside of the cabinets

If you’re painting the inside of the cabinets, start at the back and work towards the front. Use a brush to get into corners and detailed areas. It’s important to use even strokes.

Step 2: Paint the cabinet frames

Using a high-quality brush for the smaller areas and a foam roller for larger surfaces use even strokes with the brush and then finish the stroke back into the wet paint and feather out the edges. After the surface is painted and with the brush now almost dry, lightly go over the section you have just painted with vertical strokes to ensure an even coating, stopping on an upward stroke. This is called ‘laying off’.

Step 3: Paint the doors and drawers

Follow the same technique as for the frames.

Step 4: Apply further coats of paint

Apply further coats of paint to get the coverage you desire. You may need to apply up to four coats.

Step 5. Apply varnish

Τι δέν πρέπει να κάνετε πρίν ξεκινήσετε να βάψετε τα ντουλάπια της κουζίνας σας!

 

Εντάξει, αποφασίσατε να βάψετε τα ντουλάπια της κουζίνας σας και αναζητάτε έμπνευση στο Pinterest. Μπορείτε να δείτε το προηγούμενο άρθρο μου εδώ Θέλετε να μεταμορφώσετε την κουζίνα σας, αλλά δεν ξέρετε από πού να ξεκινήσετε - βάψτε τα ντουλάπια σας!  Τα βαμμένα ντουλάπια που κοιτάζετε φαίνονται αρκετά απλά, λίγο χρώμα και αυτό είναι! Ωστόσο, μια προειδοποίηση, δεν είναι τόσο απλά τα πράγματα! Εάν θέλετε να αποφύγετε μια καταστροφή και να σπαταλήσετε τα χρήματα που θα ξοδέψετε για χρώμα και προμήθειες, έχω αναφέρει μερικά από τα πράγματα που πρέπει να αποφύγετε.

Εάν ακολουθήσετε αυτά τα βήματα, τότε θα ενθουσιαστείτε με το αποτέλεσμα και θα έχετε μια ολοκαίνουργια κουζίνα με πάρα πολύ λιγότερα χρήματα σε σχέση με την αγορά νέας.

• Δεν καθαρίζετε σωστά τις επιφάνειες πριν βάψετε!

Ακόμα και αν πιστεύετε ότι τα ντουλάπια ςας είναι απόλυτα καθαρά, πρέπει να αφιερώσετε χρόνο για να τα καθαρίσετε καλά με ένα καλό καθαριστικό. Ο χειρότερος εχθρός των χρωμάτων με βάση το νερό είναι το λίπος, το χρώμα δεν θα κολλήσει.

• Δεν αφαιρείτε τα χερούλια η τα πόμολα!

Σας συνιστώ να βγάλτε όλες τις πόρτες και να αφαιρέσετε τα συρτάρια για να τα βάψετε, αλλά πρέπει να είστε πολύ προσεκτικοί όταν τίς επανατοποθετήσετε, καθος οι πόρτες και οι μεντεσέδες πρεπει να τοποθετούν με ακρίβεια όπος και πρίν.

Εάν βάψετε τις πόρτες ενώ είναι ακόμη συνδεδεμένες, προσπαθήστε να αποφύγετε να βάψετε τους μεντεσέδες καθώς το χρώμα ενδέχεται να ξεφτίσει.

Θα πρέπει να αφαιρέσετε όλα τα χερούλια η τα πόμολα της πόρτας, μην δοκιμάσετε να βάψετε της πόρτες με αυτά ακόμα συνδεδεμένα για να εξοικονομήσετε χρόνο, αυτά ειναι εμπόδια όταν προσπαθείτε να επιτύχετε μια ομαλή, ομοιόμορφη επιφάνεια κατά τη βαφή.

• Δεν σημειώνετε τις πόρτες και τα ντουλάπια!

Εάν αποφασίσετε να αφαιρέσετε τις πόρτες και τα συρτάρια, τότε μην ξεχάσετε να σημειώνετε στην καθεμία και στο ντουλάπι από το οποίο αφαιρέθηκε, με ένα κομμάτι χαρτό ταινία με αντίστοιχους αριθμούς γραμένα, διαφορετικά, όταν πρόκειται να επανατοποθετήσετε της πόρτας θα τραβήξετε τα μαλλιά σας ψάχνοντας για το ντουλάπι από το οποίο αφαιρέθηκε!

• Δεν τρίβετε!

Πρέπει να τρίβετε ελαφρά τα ντουλάπια και της πόρτες πρώτα με γυαλόχαρτο 150 ή 200 grit, καθώς αυτό θα βοηθήσει το χρώμα να κολλήσει στο ξύλο. Ακόμα και αν τα ντουλάπια σας είναι MDF ή laminate, μπορείτε να αγριέψετε λίγο την επιφάνεια. Απλά κάντε σε όλες τις επιφάνειες μια γρήγορη λείανση, μην προσπαθείτε να βγάλετε το γυμνό ξύλο, το μόνο που χρειάζεται να κάνετε είναι να ξεθωριάσετε τη γυαλιστερή επιφάνεια.

• Δεν βεβαιώνεστε ότι τα ντουλάπια σας δεν έχουν σκόνη ή σκουπίδια πριν βάψετε!

Βεβαιωθείτε ότι έχετε αφαιρέσει τυχόν σκόνη από το τρίψιμο και άλλα κομμάτια σκουπιδιών πριν ξεκινήσετε τη βαφή. Εάν παραμείνει σκόνη και σκουπίδια στην βαμμένη σας επιφάνεια, θα φαίνεται χάλια και θα χρειαστεί να τρίψετε ξανά και να βάψετε ξανά την επιφάνεια.

• Δεν χρησιμοποιείτε αστάρι!

Αν και πολλά από τα χρώματα στην αγορά διαφημίζουν το γεγονός ότι μπορείτε να τα χρησιμοποιήσετε χωρίς τρίψιμο ή αστάρωμα και είναι δελεαστικό να παραλείψετε αυτό το βήμα, συνιστώ να εφαρμόσετε το αστάρι ούτως ή άλλως. Μερικές φορές, ενδέχεται κάποια  ξύλα να ξεράσουν διάφορες ουσίες που είχαν κατά την παλιά τους επεξεργασία, στο καινούρια σας βαφη! Πχ όπος ξερνάει η νικοτίνη στον τοίχο όταν το βάφεις και αυτό είναι καταστροφή. Εάν ανησυχείτε ότι τα ντουλάπια της κουζίνας σας μπορεί να έχουν αυτό το πρόβλημα, μπορείτε να εφαρμόζεται ένα sealer (σφαγιστικό πόρων). Επίσης, επιφάνειες που δεν είναι πορώδεις, όπως MDF, laminate κ.λπ. πρέπει να ασταρωθούν πριν από τη βαφή για θα επιτρέψει το χρώμα να κολλήσει σωστά.

• Δεν σηκώνετε τις πόρτες πριν τις βάψετε!

Εάν δεν σηκώνετε την πόρτα πριν την βάψετε, δεν θα μπορείτε να βάψετε σωστά τις άκρες και τις γωνίες και δεν μπορείτε να αφαιρέσετε τα τρεξίματα. Βάλτε της πόρτες σε μερικά άδεια κουτιά απο κονσέρβες για να μπορείτε να κάνετε ευκολότερα ελιγμούς με το πινέλο γύρω από τις άκρες.

• Μην περιμένετε να επιτύχετε ένα απόλυτα ομαλό αποτέλεσμα!

Εάν τα ντουλάπια είναι ξύλινα και έχουν έντονα νερά, τότε οι αυλακώσεις θα φαίνονται και μέσα από το χρώμα.

Εάν τα ντουλάπια είναι MDF ή laminate και χρησιμοποιείτε πινέλο, τότε μπορεί να έχετε σημάδια πινέλου που θα χαλάσουν την ομαλή επιφάνεια, για να αποφύγετε αυτό θα πρέπει να χρησιμοποιήσετε ένα ρόλο.

• Μην προσπαθείτε να ολοκληρώσετε την εργασία σε μια μέρα!

Η βαφή των ντουλαπιών της κουζίνας σας δεν είναι κάτι που μπορεί να γίνει σε μια μέρα ή σε ένα Σαββατοκύριακο! Πρέπει να υπολογίσετε τουλάχιστον τέσσερις ημέρες για να ολοκληρώσετε την εργασία.

What not to do before painting your kitchen cabinets!

 

OK, so you have decided to take the plunge and paint your kitchen cabinets and you have turned to the web for inspiration. See my previous article Do you want to transform your kitchen, but you don’t know where to start - paint your kitchen cabinets!  The painted cabinets that you are looking at look simple enough to do, just a few coats of paint and that’s it! A word of warning though, it’s not quite so simple! If you want to avoid a disaster and wasting the money that you will spend on paint and supplies I have listed a few of the things that you should avoid doing.

If you follow these steps then you will be thrilled with the result and have a brand new kitchen for a fraction of the cost that you would have spent buying new kitchen cabinets.

•     You don't clean the surfaces properly before painting

Even if you think your kitchen cabinets are perfectly clean you should take the time to clean them well with a degreaser. Water-based paints' worst enemy is grease spots, the paint will not stick.

• You don't remove the doorknobs

I do recommend that you take all the doors off and remove the drawers and paint them separately but you need to be very careful when reattaching the doors as the hinges may become unaligned meaning that the doors will not open and close properly and you will need to pay a cabinet maker to come and realign them for you! If you do paint the doors while still attached, then try to avoid painting the hinges as they will end up chipping and cracking after a while.

You should remove all the doorknobs, don’t try painting the doors with them still attached to save time, the knobs will be an obstacle when you are trying to achieve a smooth, even surface when painting.

• You don’t label the doors and cabinets

If you do decide to remove the doors and drawers then don’t forget to label each one and the cabinet it was removed from with a piece of masking tape with corresponding numbers on, otherwise, when it comes to rehanging the door you will pull your hair out looking for the correct cabinet that it was removed from!

• You don’t sand

You should lightly sand the cabinets first with 150 or 200 grit sandpaper as this will help the paint to stick to the wood. Even if your cabinets are MDF, or laminate you can still rough the surface up a little. Just give all of the surfaces a quick sanding, you are not trying to get down to the bare wood all you need to do is to dull the glossy surface.

• You don’t make sure that your cabinets don’t have any dust or rubbish before painting

Make sure you remove any dust from sanding and any other bits of rubbish before you start painting. If dust and rubbish remain on your painted surface it will look gritty and you will need to sand again and repaint the surface.

• You don't use primer

Although a lot of the paints on the market advertise the fact that you can use them without sanding or priming and it is tempting to skip this step but I do recommend applying a primer anyway. Sometimes, certain woods may bleed through the paint and this is a disaster. If you are worried that your kitchen cabinets may have this problem you can invest in a stain-blocking primer. Also, surfaces that are nonporous such as MDF, laminate, etc should be primed before painting which will enable the paint to stick properly.

• You don't raise the doors before painting

If you have removed the doors and you don't raise them before painting, you wont be able to paint the edges and corners of the doors properly and you cannot remove any drips. Lay the doors on some empty tins so you can easily move a brush all around the edges.

• Don’t expect to achieve a perfectly smooth finish

If the cabinets are wooden and have a visible grain then the grain is going to show through the paint. If the cabinets are MDF or laminate and you use a paintbrush then you may have brush marks that will spoil the smooth surface, to avoid this you should use a roller.

• You try to complete the job in a day

Painting your kitchen cabinets is not something that can be done in a day or over a weekend! You need to account for at least 4 days to complete the job.

Whether you love a modern or a more traditional style, by painting your cabinets, you can completely transform your kitchen. Well, I'm here to tell you how!

• The first step is to find the right color for your kitchen cabinets.

Today, I will talk about how we can choose the right color. There are many paint colors and different techniques available on the market which allows you to create the kitchen of your dreams.

• When choosing the right color, it helps to consider the style of your cupboards.

If you have a traditional kitchen, classic colors like cream, beige and white, go perfectly and look great.

If you have a modern kitchen, your palette can grow significantly, as bright and vibrant colors like red, green, or yellow look great in a modern kitchen.

• Next you will need to think about how much natural light your kitchen has.

If your kitchen does not have a lot of natural light, you may want to paint with lighter shades and warm tones for your kitchen cabinets. Light, warm shades give the illusion of adding light.

If you have large windows in your kitchen that allow plenty of natural light in, you have much more flexibility to add darker shades to your palette.

• Use one color:

Painting your kitchen cabinets with a single color is elegant and timeless. The contrast created when black, dark brown, or dark gray cabinets are combined with light walls and kitchen floors is wonderful.

• Use two colors:

Two different colors are striking. Choose a bright color and combine it with a neutral color. You could paint the lower cabinet doors in the bright color and the upper cabinet doors in the neutral color. Or you could just paint your kitchen island a different color from the rest of the kitchen.

 • Use different shades of one color:

If neutral colors are too boring for you, but bright colors are too much, why not choose two different shades of one color. Use dark shades of gray or brown on your upper cabinets, while lighter shades of the same color are used on the lower cabinets (or vice versa). This technique keeps things neutral, but adds an extra element of visual interest.
