What not to do before painting your kitchen cabinets!

OK, so you have decided to take the plunge and paint your kitchen cabinets and you have turned to the web for inspiration. See my previous article Do you want to transform your kitchen, but you don’t know where to start - paint your kitchen cabinets!  The painted cabinets that you are looking at look simple enough to do, just a few coats of paint and that’s it! A word of warning though, it’s not quite so simple! If you want to avoid a disaster and wasting the money that you will spend on paint and supplies I have listed a few of the things that you should avoid doing.

If you follow these steps then you will be thrilled with the result and have a brand new kitchen for a fraction of the cost that you would have spent buying new kitchen cabinets.

  •     You don't clean the surfaces properly before painting

Even if you think your kitchen cabinets are perfectly clean you should take the time to clean them well with a degreaser. Water-based paints' worst enemy is grease spots, the paint will not stick.

  • You don't remove the doorknobs

I do recommend that you take all the doors off and remove the drawers and paint them separately but you need to be very careful when reattaching the doors as the hinges may become unaligned meaning that the doors will not open and close properly and you will need to pay a cabinet maker to come and realign them for you! If you do paint the doors while still attached, then try to avoid painting the hinges as they will end up chipping and cracking after a while.

You should remove all the doorknobs, don’t try painting the doors with them still attached to save time, the knobs will be an obstacle when you are trying to achieve a smooth, even surface when painting.

  • You don’t label the doors and cabinets

If you do decide to remove the doors and drawers then don’t forget to label each one and the cabinet it was removed from with a piece of masking tape with corresponding numbers on, otherwise, when it comes to rehanging the door you will pull your hair out looking for the correct cabinet that it was removed from!

  • You don’t sand

You should lightly sand the cabinets first with 150 or 200 grit sandpaper as this will help the paint to stick to the wood. Even if your cabinets are MDF, or laminate you can still rough the surface up a little. Just give all of the surfaces a quick sanding, you are not trying to get down to the bare wood all you need to do is to dull the glossy surface.

  • You don’t make sure that your cabinets don’t have any dust or rubbish before painting

Make sure you remove any dust from sanding and any other bits of rubbish before you start painting. If dust and rubbish remain on your painted surface it will look gritty and you will need to sand again and repaint the surface.

  • You don't use primer

Although a lot of the paints on the market advertise the fact that you can use them without sanding or priming and it is tempting to skip this step but I do recommend applying a primer anyway. Sometimes, certain woods may bleed through the paint and this is a disaster. If you are worried that your kitchen cabinets may have this problem you can invest in a stain-blocking primer. Also, surfaces that are nonporous such as MDF, laminate, etc should be primed before painting which will enable the paint to stick properly.

  • You don't raise the doors before painting

If you have removed the doors and you don't raise them before painting, you wont be able to paint the edges and corners of the doors properly and you cannot remove any drips. Lay the doors on some empty tins so you can easily move a brush all around the edges.

  • Don’t expect to achieve a perfectly smooth finish

If the cabinets are wooden and have a visible grain then the grain is going to show through the paint. If the cabinets are MDF or laminate and you use a paintbrush then you may have brush marks that will spoil the smooth surface, to avoid this you should use a roller.

  • You try to complete the job in a day

Painting your kitchen cabinets is not something that can be done in a day or over a weekend! You need to account for at least 4 days to complete the job.

In my next article I will talk about the different types of paint available and how to paint your kitchen cabinets.

Do you want to transform your kitchen, but you don’t know where to start - paint your kitchen cabinets!

Your kitchen is the heart of your home and your cabinets determine the entire decor of your kitchen. Whether you love a modern or a more traditional style, by painting your cabinets, you can completely transform your kitchen. So, if you are tired of your boring, old cabinets and want to give new life to your kitchen, then paint them!

How; I hear you say.

Well, I'm here to tell you how!

• The first step is to find the right color for your kitchen cabinets.

Today, I will talk about how we can choose the right color. There are many paint colors and different techniques available on the market which allows you to create the kitchen of your dreams.

• When choosing the right color, it helps to consider the style of your cupboards.

If you have a traditional kitchen, classic colors like cream, beige and white, go perfectly and look great.

If you have a modern kitchen, your palette can grow significantly, as bright and vibrant colors like red, green, or yellow look great in a modern kitchen.

• Next you will need to think about how much natural light your kitchen has.

If your kitchen does not have a lot of natural light, you may want to paint with lighter shades and warm tones for your kitchen cabinets. Light, warm shades give the illusion of adding light.

If you have large windows in your kitchen that allow plenty of natural light in, you have much more flexibility to add darker shades to your palette.

• Use one color:

Painting your kitchen cabinets with a single color is elegant and timeless. The contrast created when black, dark brown, or dark gray cabinets are combined with light walls and kitchen floors is wonderful.

• Use two colors:

Two different colors are striking. Choose a bright color and combine it with a neutral color. You could paint the lower cabinet doors in the bright color and the upper cabinet doors in the neutral color. Or you could just paint your kitchen island a different color from the rest of the kitchen.

 • Use different shades of one color:

If neutral colors are too boring for you, but bright colors are too much, why not choose two different shades of one color. Use dark shades of gray or brown on your upper cabinets, while lighter shades of the same color are used on the lower cabinets (or vice versa). This technique keeps things neutral, but adds an extra element of visual interest.

In my next article, I will talk about what you should do before painting your kitchen and the mistakes you need to avoid.

How to protect your painted furniture! Wax vs varnish.

In my previous article “How to protect your painted furniture! Varnish vs wax” I talked about how to seal and protect that little table which you saved from the landfill and painted so beautifully. I mentioned all the different types of varnishes and how to use them. Well, today we will talk about the different types of furniture waxes and how to use them correctly.

Applying wax to furniture is now more popular than ever before. Wax is a lot easier to apply than varnish to seal and protect your painted furniture. Wax can also be used to change the color of a piece and you can use it to create different patinas thus making your piece unique. That is why furniture wax is so popular!

However, before you decide that you want to wax your piece, let me give you some information about that enticing can of wax first so that you can be sure that wax really is for you instead of varnish.

Once a piece is waxed then you cannot use any other product on top, so if you decide that you want to repaint the piece or instead of wax you want to varnish it you will need to remove all the wax first by sanding the piece down to the paint.

I speak from experience, I had painted a bed in chalk paint and then I waxed it. However the piece did not sell and I wanted to change the style of the bed by painting on stripes so I had to sand off all the wax which took me quite a while and a lot of elbow grease! Luckily the bed was not ornate so it was fairly easy to sand off the wax. Then I gave the paint a good clean and I repainted the piece which I waxed again as I loved the soft, sheen of wax on the bed.

The protective quality of clear wax does not compare to water based varnishes.

If you are working on a high traffic furniture piece such as a dining table, coffee table, kitchen cupboards etc, you will need durability and you will get a durable top coat with a polyacrylic  or polyurethane varnish (which I talked about in my previous article which you can read here if you missed it).  Polyacrylic and polyurethane varnishes protect the paint as the varnish sits on top of it, whereas furniture wax will not be as durable since it absorbs into the paint which means you will need to re-wax after every 6 months or so.

If your furniture piece is an accent piece that you want a certain look for, wax may be your only option.  Antique, aged or matte buffed finishes require wax to achieve the look

So, here I will list the different types of waxes available on the market:

  • Clear wax:

Clear wax is necessary to use when you want to seal your painted furniture with wax, it creates a barrier coat which seals the paint and makes it waterproof thus protecting it from spills, dirt and scratches. However in my opinion clear wax is best used in low use areas.  So if that little table you just painted is to be used as a coffee table, then sealing it with wax may not be enough, your hot cup of coffee could melt the wax creating an uneven finish. Of course the answer to that is to have a good supply of coasters available!

Clear wax will change the color of your paint slightly, but the color will be richer. Keep in mind that wax absorbs into matte paint, so to keep your furniture water-proof you will need to re-apply your wax.

  • How to apply clear furniture wax correctly:

1.  Clean the surface to be waxed:

Make sure the piece is totally clean before you apply your wax.  Use a damp cloth and wipe the piece down thoroughly and allow to dry.

2.  Apply the wax with a wax brush or a cloth:

I use a wax brush and I also use old t-shirts to apply and to buff the wax. T-shirts are perfect as they do not have fibers which may stick to the wax.  I usually apply using a circular motion but you can apply wax in any direction, even across the grain.

3.  Apply Thin Coats

I usually apply clear furniture wax in two thin coats. I apply the first coat and wait for it to dry and be absorbed into the paint, this can take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to dry depending on the weather and room conditions then I apply the second coat. The wax will have a slightly hazy look when dry.  A thick coat of wax takes ages to cure and will feel sticky for longer. If you have applied too much wax, you can wipe the excess off with a cloth.  If the piece to be waxed is large you can wax and buff in sections at a time.

4.  Buff the wax

Once the second coat of wax has dried take a clean cloth and buff the wax until you get that gorgeous sheen that only wax will give you.  The longer the wax stays on, the harder the wax gets, wax is like paint, it cures and hardens with time.

**Important - Before using the other types of waxes that I mention below you should first seal your piece with clear wax!

  • White Wax:

White wax can create a gorgeous white washed or beachy effect on wood or paint or you can use it to highlight ornate parts of the piece and special areas or the edges of the piece that you want to stand out.  Be careful though, white wax is not a protective coating for your furniture, it’s an aging wax so be sure to seal your piece first with clear wax.

  • Dark wax:

Dark wax is used to age the piece. With the correct application dark wax can make the item look old, antique or weathered and gives depth to the piece. Dark wax also looks great on black paint. Dark wax can be applied anywhere that dirt can gather over the years. There are various shades of dark wax; brown wax, black wax and antiquing wax.  A word of warning, use dark waxes carefully, it can make your piece look dirty instead of giving you that antique aged effect that you so desire, make sure you have first sealed your piece with clear wax.

  • Tinted waxes:

Tinted waxes are absolutely gorgeous for highlighting areas of your piece and they can really give your item that wow factor. A great way to create more depth to the paint that you used is to use a tinted wax in the same tone of paint that you used. Make sure that you have sealed your piece first with clear wax.

So now it’s up to you. Happy waxing!
